Yorkshire Sculpture Garden & National Coal Mining Museum


We had some good fortune this weekend in that the weather was fantastic on the day that we had free.  Sunny, blue skies and 60-62F.  Perfect.  So how do we spend the morning?  450 feet below ground.  Huh?  We'll, there were two sites I wanted to see outside of Wakefield which is just over an hour north.  The first of those was the National Coal Mining Museum (link).

The Museum is at the site of a forming working coal mine which closed in 1985 (museum opened in 1988).  You could spend a good chunk of the day there but we went primarily for the underground tour.  Admission is FREE as is parking.

There was a small museum and special exhibit that we took a look through prior to our tour.   The special exhibit was the photo essay centered around the miners strike from 1984-5.  Lots of info on wiki (here) but that was essentially the beginning of the end for the UK mining industry.  In 1983 Britain has 174 working mines; by 2009 there were 6. Horrible way to have to earn a living, in my (soft) opinion, but a crummy job is better than no job.

Not only does this tie into my recent Industrial Revolution theme (Ironbridge, Magna Steel Works) but this strike was the setting for the movie and musical Billy Elliot (that we saw in London).


The highlight of the visit was the tour into the mine.  We donned our hard hats and a battery pack and lamp.  We had to leave everything with a battery (watch, key fob, camera, phone, etc.) above ground so no photos.  Down below they had a former miner take us through the mines and show us various working conditions in the mines.  Just squeezing the group on the lift/elevator to go down made quite an impression.

The most telling exhibit was the Victorian era family (late 1800's) where the entire family was down in the mine.  The little boy's job was to sit in the dark and open the little door when required.  Eventually, women and girls were not allowed to work in those conditions.

As we walked through (or hunch-scrambled) various safety measures were discussed though it was mentioned that most were reactionary means due to an accident or death.  I'm thankful that I don't have to do that kind of work and I hope a little bit of that sinks into the kids as well.

Reminded me of the excellent book and movie Rocket Boys / October Sky.  Highly recommended if you haven't read the book or seen the movie.

After a reasonably priced lunch in the cafe, we walked back to the car.  Nothing particular about this shot.  Quintessential England to me with the hills and tight cluster of houses in certain areas.  Amazing blue sky today -- not typical!

The next stop was the outdoor activity of the day--the Yorkshire Sculpture Garden (link) which was about 10 minutes from the Mining Museum.  The site is set on the grounds of Bretton Hall, an 18th century estate.  Not sure of the actual size, but I'm guessing we did about a 3 mile loop around to the various sculptures scattered about.  See the map on the last page of this PDF link.  It's a nice way to get some exercise as you don't have to walk too far before you see something new. 

Note, this is also FREE though parking is £5.  Cheap day out too.

There was a stretch walking out to the back of the property were I kept Alex entertained with some math problems.  We did squares (2x2, 3x3, etc) up to 32 before both of our brains cramped up.

We topped it off with the usual ice cream treat at the end.  Everyone had a good day.  We were tired though!


We had a repeat Nicole meal-of-the-week this week:  ham and mushroom pasta.  Very good.


Spring is coming and so has the return of the enormous pigeon like creatures.  I have no idea how this guy can fly.  This shot is out of our bedroom window.  He's pretty much chicken size.

MAGNA Science Adventure

Following on from last week's Ironbridge visit and the Industrial Revolution, I decided to take the kids to the MAGNA Science Adventure Centre.  I got the tip from a co-worker (my boss actually) and it was the perfect day for it.  In other words, it looked nothing like the stock-footage picture above.  We'd been softened up by some nice weather last weekend and throughout the week but cooler temperatures (40F) and a steady rain made for an indoor day.

MAGNA is in Rotherham which is essentially Sheffield and a very easy 45 minute drive to the north.  Sheffield, like other cities in the area, played a key part in the Industrial Revolution particularly when it comes to steel.  Many steel mills (or steel works as they are called here) were in the area.  The MAGNA site was a former steel works that recycled scrap steel back to usable steel.

First, a geeky aside on steel from Wikipedia:

Steel is an alloy that consists mostly of iron and has a carbon content between 0.2% and 2.1% by weight, depending on the grade. Carbon is the most common alloying material for iron, ... and acts as a hardening agent. Varying the amount of alloying elements and the form of their presence in the steel controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel.


 
Here are the kids as we set off inside.  Note, we are inside and we haven't removed our coats (nor would we).  Out of the rain, but not the cold as it was an unheated steel works.


Part of the exhibit was a demo of their arc furnace.  They converted to these in the late 1960's which turned a 12-hr process to 90 minutes.  Each furnace did about 120 tons of steel in that time frame.  In 1977 they set the world record for a weekly output.  The site shut down in 1993 though.  This is the end where the slag comes in and is pre-heated by the furnace waste heat.


Sorry for the blur, it was dark.  The round bit on the right is the arc furnace.  It could tilt 15 degrees backwards to pour off the lighter slag and 45 degrees forward to pour out the good molten steel.


The furnace is no longer working (I imagine it used 1.21 Gigawatts) but they have a little pyrotechnic demo -- always a hit.

Besides the demo, they have 4 pavilions with different interactive exhibits:  earth, wind (air), fire and water.  this was the Air pavilion.   Alex is turning the crank to cause electrolysis of water to generate the gas to launch the "rocket".  The hands on activities were a big hit.

 . . . and an actual funnel cloud -- perhaps a little timely given the recent weather back home.  This was neat in that you could blow (hard) on the funnel to break it up.  Something I learned by accident in my graduate Fluids class . . . not that I remember any of the math associated with it (nor do I need to!)

And now onto to Fire while keeping the funnel them.  A pool of fuel + offset jets + spark = a nice fire funnel.

this one was good for setting expectations as we plan to visit the real Manneken Pis in Brussels over Easter (he's no bigger).  Not sure if we needed to see human water recycling demonstrated though.

We also went to the Earth exhibit but I didn't take any pictures.  They had some big front loaders that Alex enjoyed using.

We had lunch there as well -- not too bad.  Nicole mentioned that Alex's hamburger was as big as his head --funny.  He actually ate the whole thing too.  Some days he eats, others he doesn't.  Oh well.

All in all, it was a pretty good day.  I would have liked to have seen them tie in the science of steel making a little more closely with the exhibits.  But, the kids had fun and they might have accidently learned something.  There were some similarities to the excellent Indianapolis Children's Museum but it was plenty unique (including fire!).

There was a tour that we took at the end for a little history of the place.  Some good info, but he overran by 30 minutes or so and we were ready to go by then.















We have a return of Nicole's meal of the week. This was chicken chow mein though it didn't have the crunchy noodles.  More of a stir fry with noodles.  Good stuff.

Ironbridge

We took advantage of an absolutely spectacular February Saturday (50F) by heading to "nearby" Ironbridge.  Ironbridge is near Telford and is about 75 minutes away (not sure if that qualifies as nearby for the locals -- more likely "not my patch").

Ironbridge is, as you can see from the photo above, named after its iron bridge.  The bridge was the first cast iron bridge in the world and was completed in 1779.  Its longest span is 100 ft.

As cool as the bridge is, I wouldn't have driven 75 minutes just to see it.  However, the entire region of the Ironbridge Gorge is also a World Heritage Site.  From one of the museum panels:

The Ironbridge Gorge offers a powerful insight into the Industrial Revolution and also contains extensive evidence of that period when the area was the focus of the international attention from artists, engineers, and writers.  The site contains substantial remains of mines,  foundries, factories, workshops, warehouses, ironmasters' and workers' housing, public buildings, infrastructure and transport systems, together with traditional landscape and forests of the Severn Gorge.

And a little more background on the Industrial Revolution from its wiki page:

The Industrial Revolution was a period from 1750 to 1850 where changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the social, economic and cultural conditions of the times. It began in the United Kingdom, then subsequently spread throughout Western Europe, North America, Japan, and eventually the rest of the world.

The Industrial Revolution marks a major turning point in history; almost every aspect of daily life was influenced in some way. Most notably, average income and population began to exhibit unprecedented sustained growth. In the two centuries following 1800, the world's average per capita income increased over tenfold, while the world's population increased over sixfold. In the words of Nobel Prize winner Robert E. Lucas, Jr., "For the first time in history, the living standards of the masses of ordinary people have begun to undergo sustained growth ... Nothing remotely like this economic behavior has happened before".

The Midlands area of England (including Derby) and the Ironbridge Gorge specifically were key figures in how the Industrial Revolution played out.

To help the interested tourist take this all in there are 10 (grouped) museums that comprise the Ironbridge Gorge Museum (link).  We spent most of our time at the Bliss Hill Victorian Town and also saw the Museum of the Gorge.  Our tickets are good for a year so we'll have to come back to see the others.

On to the photos:

Fairly impressive sight, especially considering this was built in 1779.  In doing some reading (after the fact), I found out that other cast iron bridges were built but there were a number of failures such that many were rebuilt with wrought iron or steel.  (This bridge is pedestrian only and not subjected to heavy loading).  [Geek note:  cast iron is good in compression and why it's good to have arches like shown above.  Most of the failures were when it was used in tension.  Needless to say, bridges are not built this way anymore.]

You can (maybe) get a feel for the town and the various museum locations from this panel board.  I think it is a few miles across and you do need to drive from one to the other (for the most part -- some are grouped).


Rewinding a bit, we actually started the day a the Bliss Hill Victorian Town, meant to represent the area around 1900 I believe (link).  The town has many period shops and businesses with some actors to explain how things were (though not strictly in character like at Williamsburg, VA or Conner Prairie, IN).  We spent more time here than I thought we would.  It was a really nice day out and we enjoyed our time strolling around the "town".

Moving on to some of the specific stores and shops.  I enjoyed looking through the grocery store.

They developed this really neat inclined plane to transport goods, etc. to the river and back (restored in 1980).  From the website:

The Hay Inclined Plane connects the canal at Blists Hill with the canal at Coalport, lifting boats 63m using a combination of steam power and gravity. The inclined plane was opened in 1792 and remained in use until the end of the nineteenth century. It survives today as one of the most impressive structures of its type in the country.

Mammoth blowing engine(s) called David and Sampson.  Again from the wiki page:

A blowing engine is a large stationary steam engine directly coupled to air pumping cylinders. They deliver a very large quantity of air at a pressure lower than an air compressor, but greater than a centrifugal fan.  Blowing engines are used to provide the air blast for furnaces, blast furnaces and other forms of smelter.

Where the later beam engines drove flywheels, this was useful for providing a more even action to the engine. The air cylinder was still driven by the beam alone and the flywheel was used solely as a flywheel, not driving an output shaft. A well-known surviving example of this type are the paired beam engines "David & Sampson", now preserved at Blists Hill open air museum, Ironbridge Gorge. These are a pair of single-cylinder condensing beam engines, each driving an air cylinder by their own beam, but sharing a single flywheel between them.

The flywheel is 20 feet, 4 inches in diameter.  The middle steam cylinders are 38.75 inches in diameter and the far right blowing cylinders are 78 inches in diameter.  54.7 and 82.75 HP for the engines.

Switching gears to the Museum of the Gorge (link).  This was an interesting tableau that basically confirmed what rotten conditions folks in the town were subjected to.  Pollution, disease, etc.  Many things to be thankful for today.

Well, hopefully I didn't bore you with all the extra detail this week.  I also use these entries as impetus for me to actually look a few things up (often after the fact) to make sure I learned something too.

We had a really nice day out and were glad to share it with our friends.  We look forward to going back another time to see the other museums.

The Nicole meal of the week has been missing for a variety of reasons.  That hopes to return this week.  However, Nicole has been working on her puzzle that she bought at Hamley's in London.  She just finished the 1000 piece puzzle all by herself and is quite proud (as she should be).  Still a Disney fan at heart (though I was surprised by the choice).  Her lounging, sofa-slug brother is obviously thrilled as well (not so much).
